Summary:
Thomas More uses a fictional character relating his travels to the island of Utopia in order to present his idea of a 'perfect' civilization.
Thoughts:
This was such an interesting text to read, and the simplicity of the translation made it very easy to comprehend. I definitely did not agree with all of the rules that More described, but many of them were deeply clever (using gold for chamber pots so it could be stored & used but not hoarded is so cool) but also some of the ideas were ridiculous (seeing your husband/wife naked before marriage to make sure there was nothing wrong with them is a very gross thought). More than anything, the book was a well-thought-out blueprint that allows readers to think about what makes a good society, whether they agree with More's ideas or whether reading his ideas let them think about what would be better--what would be more utopian.
