Summary:
Bast is known by all the children in town as the man who will always make a bargain. A favor, a secret, a riddle--Bast will trade anything, and trade for anything, but if you enter into a deal with him, you're sure to get a surprise. What the children don't know is that Bast is truly fae, and though he adores trickery his bargains are unbreakable. From sunup to midnight, The Narrow Road Between Desires tells the story of a single long summer day in Bast's life.

Thoughts:
Patrick Rothfuss's writing is so satisfying. His ability to open and close all his stories with a very specific calm imagine of an inn is wonderful, and creates this storyscape that is predictable and engaging and lovely to sink into. The way he describes trickery and tales and magic and nature is also really amazing; he's so talented. Even though this story was just an idyllic day in Bast's life, every detail feels so magical and important and promising.
Though the overarching plot of this story was very simple, it was also really cute. It was made up of lots of side quests that all were revealed to be cohesive at the very end, and Bast's goal and plan were so clever it was very fun to think back onto how all the seemingly unrelated details and events all connected together. Although I would have preferred that Rothfuss just write the conclusion to the Kingkiller Chronicles trilogy, I am still very glad I got to read this book.
