Summary:
Hal Mikelson is a brilliant inventor but an outcast in his Skandian town thanks to his smaller stature and half-Araluen parentage. When he is appointed leader of a small band of misfit boys during Brotherband training, he must find a way to bring the boys together to win the Brotherband competition and prove their worth within Skandian society.

Thoughts:
The competence and cleverness in this book never fails to bring me joy. Every character is so good at their niche; it's ridiculously comforting. The way Hal thinks is also lovely and refreshing to read; the logic and calm way he approaches problems is honestly quite inspiring. Though Flanagan wrote this series for his young son to read, the combination of excitement and orderly competence, as well as the easy -to-understand descriptions of emotions and social dynamics, are lovely for people of any age.
