Summary:
Once upon a time, before Queen Levana was the evil ruler of Luna, she was a girl in love. Armed with her Lunar gift and a glamour to hide the burn scars across her face that her bored older sister Channary gave her as a child, Levana was determined to win over handsome palace guard Evret--no matter his dying wife or baby daughter--as well as the everlasting love of the people of Luna.
Thoughts:
This is absolutely one of my favorite villain origin stories ever. It's so well written, and presents Levana as sympathetic and complex without ignoring her blindness to the suffering of others. Her obsession with beauty and perfection, combined with her inability to see perspectives other than her own, is fascinating. Especially because she's perhaps a bit too relatable, her perspective is a really cool insight into the series. I can't wait to finish Winter and take a deeper look at the role of beauty and perfection in the series as a whole.
