Summary:
Celaena has won the King's contest; now she has to live with herself as his champion--only she can't stomach the idea of killing innocent men who have infuriated the cruel king, and instead she begins to fake their deaths despite her terror of the consequences. On top of that, continuing a relationship with the king's son, Dorian, seems a terrible idea, so she begins instead to grow closer to Chaol, the captain of the guard, even as Dorian struggles alone with a new truth about himself.
But although Cain was defeated, the evil in the castle was not. Shadowed figures roam the library at night, and Elena will not leave Celaena's dreams in peace, instead haunting her with cryptic warnings about dark power in the castle for Celaena to discover and understand. As tensions mount in the castle, Celaena must decide just how much of her crueler and more effective attributes to set aside--she must decide just how human she can be.

Thoughts:
This is my least favorite book in the series, because there is less powerful-Celaena and more incompetent-but-romanticized-Chaol, and we hate Chaol. That being said, I do love this book. SJM's writing just works for me somehow, and I find all of her books very exciting to read. I love how extreme Celaena is, how much misery she can take, how much power she has, and how she experiences her emotions. Most of all, this book was necessary in order for me to reach Heir of Fire, which I cannot wait to start ASAP.
