Summary:
It's been two years since Janie's adventures with Benjamin, when they helped to stop an atomic bomb. With the help of her returned diary and letters from Benjamin, Janie has gotten back most of her memory of those fateful weeks. But while she still craves adventure and independence and longs for Benjamin, she's a student at an American boarding school now, and she can't help but think that two years seems like a very long time to wait for someone.
Then Janie's science project, a replication of Jin Lo's desalination process, is stolen, and Janie is kidnapped. Soon Benjamin and the other Apothecaries become involved. But the man who kidnapped Janie is dangerous, and his plans are bigger than just one kidnapping.

Thoughts:
This book is a little less arresting than the first, but I like Janie and Benjamin's relationship in it more. What can I say--I love some good pining. I like Janie's spiritedness, and I absolutely love the cleverness of the magic that they use. But the plot of this book is a little frustrating, especially to re-read, since a lot of characters make a lot of dumb choices, and having to watch them make mistakes is a little hard to take. I am busy with another re-read right now, but I intend to finish this series as soon as my TBR clears up.
