Summary:
Will, now a fully-fledged Ranger, is assigned to a fief: Seacliff. It's a small, quiet fief, perfect for a beginner, but Will quickly becomes a little bored. Then Halt asks him to go on a individual mission to check out an alleged case of sorcery in a fortress on the border. When Will arrives, he finds a sick lord, an untrustworthy heir, an ambitious general, and rampant rumors of sorcery. He must try to keep his wits about him while determining what is magic and what are just the machinations of men.

Thoughts:
There's almost no Halt in this book, which is my biggest issue with it, but aside from that, it's a solid book. I like to see Will working on his own and being clever. I like the dog-Will-horse dynamic a lot. I like that Alys is a real character rather than just a person to look pretty and give Will approval, and even though she is definitely the princess in the rescue trope, she does it in a pretty smart, tough way. The next book is even better, and I'm excited to read it now.
