Summary:
Grey has been coming back to La Cachette, LA, to stay with her grandma for summers ever since her mom died and her dad moved. She is one of the summer children after all, one of ten born in the same year, and though, unlike all those born with her, her psychic gifts haven't materialized yet, she still belongs there. Except this is the first year that her best friend, her twin flame, won't be there. Because she's missing.
Grey needs to find out what happened to her best friend — find out who killed her — before she needs to go home for the fall, but everyone has something different to say, and nothing feels the same. Beween ominous warnings of the rougarou and a hurricane, Grey doesn't know who to believe, or who to trust. But she is determined to figure out what happened to her friend, even if it means braving the storm.

Thoughts:
This book was so good. The beginning was interesting, the setting foreign and fascinating without being unrealistically alluring. Grey wasn't a super complex character, but she wasn't annoying or anything. The first hundred pages were kind of scary. It got more mystery and thriller than horror by the end, but it was still amazing. The romance was so. effective, especially considering how light it was. It had significantly stronger chemistry than plenty of NA books I've read. The writing was also super lovely. Not super artistic, but artistic enough, natural, easy, interesting. There was a subtle but clear voice to it. The ending was also fabulous. The writing of the last few pages was incredible. Honestly, despite knowing the ending, I would consider re-reading this book, it was so good.
    Some quotes:
  • "There's an old story that tells how human beings originally had two faces, four arms, and four legs. But God was afraid of being overpowered, so he split them all in half. That's why we have one twin soul out there in the world." Split aparts!!!!!!!!!
  • "How do you go on living with only half a heart?" "But really, we're flying back through time." "Her sadness fills up the whole kitchen." All IGYTS-y.
  • "I remember how, the night my mother died, I'd been inconsolable. How I'd wailed with misery until, out of desperation, Honey had carried me down here to Elora's house, and Leo and Becky had let her slip me into bed with a sleeping Elora. How, still half asleep, she'd reached for my hand and anchored me. Stopped my free fall." I love this.
Some predictions:
  • About Evie: "Something bad is going to happen with Evie. Cheating, jealousy, betrayal, something." I mean, I was right about two out of three.
  • About Zale: " There's something off about him, magical that's not just storms, something that messes with memory and perception." Yup. I did good.
