Summary:
While studying — against her fathers wishes — with her eccentric uncle to be a medical examiner, Audrey Rose simultaneously attempts to find the culprit of a series of brutal murders in nineteenth century London and unintentionally grows closer to an infuriating yet brilliant boy also under her uncles tutorage.

Thoughts:
I really wanted to like this book. Witty genius boy, savage murders, feminist ahead-of-her-times protagonist — great sounding elements. And yet. The writing was stylized to evoke the feeling of the nineteenth century and instead came off as dull and hopelessly dry. The protagonist was unbearably flighty and idiotic rather than the witty and strong-stomached yet feminine hero I’m sure the author was aiming for. It took me two tries to read this book, and I barely made it at that. I gave it more than 1 star because there were some, if few, interacting aspects, but overall it was a predictable story with a whiny protagonist, and the only characters I had any sympathy for were the barely-named dismembered murder victims.
