Summary:
Damon has agreed to stay with Laurent until his campaign is over. Damon will not try to escape; In fact, Damon will use his considerable skill in battle to help Laurent survive, and maybe even defeat his uncle the Regent. But as the Regent's attempts to kill Laurent become more and more blatant and politics become more convoluted, Damon begins to realize that he really does want Laurent to survive. After nights scheming and sneaking and gathering information, Damon also begins to feel more for Laurent. Except Damon is still hiding his true identity, the reveal of which would both destroy his slowly evolving trust with Laurent, as well as possibly result in Damon's death.

Thoughts:
This is so much better than the first book. Laurent is a pretty good cross between Kaz Brekker and Andrew Minyard, so of course I love him. Damon is kind of an odd narrator, because usually it's more fun to have the perspective of the brains rather than the muscle, but it makes Laurent's plan reveals more interesting. The only inner ick in this book was Damon trying for a relationship with Laurent despite knowing that, if Laurent knew what Damon had done, he would hate him. That feels manipulative and therefore non-consensual, which is gross. But aside from that, super good. Lots of happy squealing at plan reveals.
